Restraining
Plate Closed Package Testing for Leak
Testing or Seal Strength Testing
Boylston,
MA: The use of restraining plates on flexible, non-porous packages accomplishes
two purposes. One purpose is to limit the tested internal volume of the package,
which is desirable under some circumstances to increase the sensitivity of the
test. Because fill time for pressurizing a smaller volume will be less, reducing
the internal volume of a package with restraining plates may reduce the time needed
to accomplish the pressure decay test. The second reason to use restraining plates
is to equalize the stress on package seals being tested for seal strength. The
stress on the package seal becomes more uniform and provides a more consistent
test of the weakest seal area. The use of variable gaps between plates provides
excellent selectivity for various package configurations.
Restraining
plate fixtures can be used for leak testing of non-porous packages as well as
the inflation seal strength of porous or non-porous packages. For leak testing,
the semi-porous surfaces stabilize expansion during pressurization without blocking
any holes in the surface material. For seal strength testing, restraining plate
fixtures provide consistent stress loading on all seals. Contact the Applications
Specialists at TM Electronics to determine if restraining plate fixtures are the
answer to your package testing problem. TM Electronics will provide customized
restraining plates to accommodate your package.
